Rooted in Tradition
At Wheel & Wood, our retreat is rooted in time-honored ceramic traditions from around the world.
We invite you to explore two powerful ceramic traditions—one passed down through generations in Slovenia, the other born from the ancient kilns of Japan. Both provide insight into pottery’s oldest practices and connect us to art making with natural resources.
Experience the art of traditional Slovenian pottery
At our retreat, you'll delve into an ancient Slovenian pottery technique involving leather straps—a method passed down through generations and preserved as part of Slovenia's UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage. This unique approach was imparted to me by Vid Polončič, a dedicated potter who studied under the esteemed Slovenian master, Štefan Zelko. Zelko is one of the few contemporary traditional potters in Slovenia whose practices are safeguarded as intangible cultural heritage.
About Štefan Zelko
Štefan Zelko, hailing from Lemerje in the Prekmurje region, is a master potter dedicated to preserving traditional Slovenian pottery techniques. His work, including the use of ancient methods like the leather strap technique and black firing, is recognized in Slovenia's Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Zelko's commitment ensures that these time-honored skills are passed down to future generations.

The Leather Strap Technique
At the heart of this retreat, you'll learn the Zelko Usnje Technique—a centuries-old pottery method passed down through Slovenian artisans. Named in honor of master potter Štefan Zelko, whose traditional craft is UNESCO-recognized and protected, this technique uses leather straps during centering and shaping to guide the form with precision and care.
This technique changed the way I throw - enabling me to center in seconds and pull pieces faster. I invite each of you to learn from me and with me, and expand your skills as new or experienced potters.
Japanese Raku Experience
Experience the thrill of Raku firing, an ancient Japanese pottery technique known for its unpredictable, one-of-a-kind finishes.
During this process, Red-hot pottery is pulled from the kiln and cooled in natural materials, creating dramatic textures and unique color variations.
Raku firing is a deeply natural process between fire, smoke, and raw elements. It connects us to the very foundation of ceramics. Together, we’ll get to engage in an ancient, hands-on ritual that deepens our connection to nature and the origins of our craft, transforming our pottery into something truly unique.
